Watching Movies Tom Selleck's Tiny Timex And Two-Tone Rolex In 'Three Men And A Baby'

 

Three roommates sharing an impossibly cool Manhattan penthouse find themselves faced with the daunting task of parenting an abandoned infant. The mother? Unclear at first. The Father? Not all of them. Nothing about Three Men and a Baby's (1987) plot is relatable to anyone on earth, but such was Hollywood in the 1980s – when flash and ridiculousness ruled the day. Why We're Watching
Father's Day is just two sleeps away, and what better film to celebrate with than a movie with not one … not two … but three fathers? Each of the surrogate dads were in the prime of their respective careers when this film was released (both Selleck and Danson had an impressive streak of Emmy nominations going at the time), and their charisma is palpable. And if you need one more television legend to convince you to watch this movie – it's directed by Mr. Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy.

Selleck is as big a watch icon as they come. We all know him as Thomas Magnum, effortlessly pairing the Rolex GMT-Master Pepsi with his signature mustache. To this day, his watch game is strong. He was recently spotted with a modern 18k gold Daytona during the Friends reunion. In this particular film, where he deals with dirty diapers instead of detective work, his choice of timepieces run the gamut. IWC Replica

Throughout this family-oriented (yet surprisingly foul-mouthed) romp, Selleck wears the most unassuming timepiece possible (a Quartz Timex Triathlon) and one of the loudest (a two-tone Rolex Datejust). Close readers will now understand my deep personal connection to this movie.

In 1987, Timex was in the throes of its full shift to quartz technology. These new Q models could keep ticking, in spite of any licking, with improved accuracy. Of course, this same era was the absolute heyday for two-tone timepieces – specifically the Datejust.

The Timex Triathlon, now known by its Ironman moniker, has amassed quite a reputation over the years. Former President Bill Clinton famously wore one in office. Nowadays, you'll find these watches in and around the 40- to 42mm size, but back in '87 that wasn't the case at all.

Sized at a paltry 36mm in diameter, this watch looks small, especially on Selleck's imposing build. The funny thing is, he still manages to make the austere digital watch look cool – like, "I'm going to pause this movie and go buy one now" cool.

For all his machismo, it's pretty interesting to see him wear two entirely different 36mm watches. Who says small watches aren't manly?

The Datejust, much like the Pepsi GMT, is a watch Selleck continues to wear to this day. You'll occasionally see it pop up on his wrist on the show Blue Bloods.

There's even a third watch in the film that's very difficult to spot. Selleck wears a mystery chronograph on a brown leather strap. Since we don’t have Thomas Magnum hot on the case, let us know if you can make out what it is in the comments.

When We're Watching
As soon as the baby arrives at the door of the truly insane penthouse, Peter and Michael (played by Selleck and Guttenberg, respectively) bring the shrieking infant inside. Peter soon realizes that the baby needs milk and food. He runs to the grocery store and scans the aisles … hopelessly. He returns home, baby food in tow, and quickly realizes there's a diaper situation unfolding. His diaper-changing performance is a real masterclass in physical comedy. As he wraps the diaper on the baby like a baby would wrap a birthday present [00:25:40], you can clearly see the Timex Triathlon on his absurdly hairy wrists. He's also wearing a tank top so, apart from just the watch, you get the full Tom Selleck hair experience.

Later in the film, the titular three men and titular baby make a day of it in Central Park. Peak '80s synth pop swells in the mix, frisbees are thrown, walks are had, and a Rolex makes its first appearance on screen [01:17:40]. That's right, Peter – wearing pleated short shorts, an oversized collared shirt and aviators – is living the New York dream (if coparenting with your two roommates is your kind of dream) with a silver-dial two-tone Datejust entirely visible throughout the mini-montage.
